How many times have you walked across the street or through a parking lot while looking at your cell phone? How about holding so many grocery bags that you can’t reach your keys when you get to your car? Or, maybe you listen to headphones while jogging or walking through the park.
Consider your personal safety and awareness in all of these scenarios.
Basic rules for personal safety:
1. Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
2. Give the impression that you are calm, confident and know where you are going.
3. Trust your instincts. If it doesn't look or feel right, it might not be.
Protect Yourself:
· Walk purposefully and make eye contact with people around you. Trust your instincts.
· Avoid alleys, short cuts & vacant lots. Stick to well-lighted, busy streets.
· Walk with a companion whenever possible.
· Avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Use ATM's during daylight hours only.
· If you are being followed, abruptly change directions, stay in a well-lighted area, and seek safety in a public building.
· Make noise, attract attention to you and the person that is following you.
· When walking to your car keep your car key or fob in your hands. Having your key ready reduces your exposure to attack. And, if you put a key between your knuckles you have a small weapon to defend yourself with.
· Store your keys or fob next to your bed. Pressing the panic button can act as an alarm in the event of an emergency.
· Lock up dangerous medications. If there are prescription drugs in your home, do not store them in medicine cabinets accessible by guests.
· Be aware of what you post on the Internet. You never know who is looking at your information. It could be stalkers, future employers, recruiters, family, etc.
